Glossary of Terms


Achilles Accreditation: Achilles UVDB is the community for the UK utilities industry. It enables the utilities sector to use Achilles' proven supplier pre-qualification system to manage risk within the supply chain and comply with EU regulations. Launched in 1996, Achilles UVDB is the largest Achilles community that is also used by the airports and ports sector. Achilles UVDB is managed by a Steering Group comprising of utility buyers to drive industry best practice.
Butterfly Valves: A valve consisting of a rotating circular plate or a pair of hinged semicircular plates, attached to a transverse spindle and mounted inside a pipe in order to regulate or prevent flow.
Couplings: Couplings are designed to join plain ended pipes of various outside diameters with the same or different nominal bore.
Dedicated Flange Adaptors and Couplings: Dedicated Flange Adaptors and Couplings are designed to suit certain pipe materials.
Dismantling Joint: Dismantling Joints are used in pipelines for installation and easy access for maintenance on valves and other pipeline products by offering adjustability.
Double Flanged Pipe: Double flanged pipe is a pipe fabricated with welded flanges both ends.
Double Studded Flange Convertors: Flange Convertors also known as Change Flanges are used to convert a different flange drilling or size.
Drainage: Drainage is the natural or artificial removal of surface and sub-surface water from an area. Many agricultural soils need drainage to improve production or to manage water supplies.
Ductile Iron Fabrication: Ductile pipes which are welded and fabricated in suitable lengths required.
Ductile Iron Pipes: Ductile iron pipe is a pipe made of ductile iron commonly used for potable water and waste water transmission and distribution. This type of pipe is a direct development of earlier cast iron pipe, which it has superseded.
DWI Approved: The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) was formed in 1990 to provide independent reassurance that water supplies in England and Wales are safe and drinking water quality is acceptable to consumers.

Fabrication: The action or process of manufacturing something.
Fasteners & Gaskets: Fasteners and gaskets are required for connecting and securing two flanged products together.
Fire Hydrants: The Underground Hydrant Valve provides a water delivery point.

Flange Spigot: a flange spigot is a pipe fabricated with a welded flange one end and a spigot end the other.
Flanged Socket: a Flanged socket is a piece fabricated with a welded flange one end and a socket the other end.
Flap Valves: a flap valve is used for surface water drainage to prevent reverse flow in outfall applications.
FlexLock Adaptors and Couplings: Self-anchoring couplings and flange adpators for Ductile Iron or Steel pipes.
Galvanised Bauer type Male & Female Couplings: Bauer type galvanised couplings provide a quick and easy way to connect layflat and suction hose together.
Gate Valves: a Gate valve used for pipeline isolation.
Manifold: Assembly of valves fittings and flanges configured to regulate and control the flow of pressure fluid from a well bore.
Non Return Valves: Also called a Swing Check Valve, used to prevent reverse flow.
O.D.: Outside Diameter.
Outfall: An outfall is the discharge point of a waste stream into a body of water. alternatively it may be the outlet of a river, drain or a sewer where it discharges into the sea.

Stepped Adaptors and Couplings: Stepped couplings are designed to join plain end pipes with different nominal bores.
Tee: A Fitting with three connections in the same plane with two of these connections forming an in-line Run. A Tee may have a fourth outlet not in the same plane as the run. (If there is a fourth outlet on the same plane it is called a cross not a tee).
